HMS Hercules was laid down by Vickers Armstrong on 12 November 1943 and launched on 22 September 1945. Work was thereafter suspended until Hercules was earmarked for India. The ship was completed to a heavily modified design and commissioned in the Indian Navy as INS Vikrant in 1961.
