Gladiator (2000 movie)

Gladiator DVD

Gladiator was a popular movie that appeared in 2000, directed by Ridley Scott, and starring Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix. It was nominated for a number of Academy Awards including:

The movie is loosely based on the life of the deranged Roman emperor Commodus (ruled between 180-192 AD, played by Phoenix), who scandalized Roman society by appearing in the Colosseum as a gladiator. Also in the movie is a Roman general turned gladiator named Maximus Decius Meridius (played by Russell Crowe) whose family was killed on orders from Commodus, and is now eager to seek revenge.

The character Maximus, together with other characters and the opening sequence of the film (set in Germany) is inspired by possibly the most powerful work of historical fiction, Eagle in the Snow, by Wallace Breem.

His father, emperor Marcus Aurelius appears in the film as a character played by Richard Harris.

The sound track was composed by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard.
