Gay slang

Gay slang refers to slang used predominantly among gay and lesbian people.

Slang frequently arises from the need of a particular subculture to create or maintain secrecy or to describe situations, acts and things not common in the dominant culture.

Assimilation and use of the slang also gives individuals the feeling of belonging necessary in the creation of a subculture.

Many terms that were originally gay slang have become part of the popular lexicon. Along with other terms, the term "drag," originally a Polari (British gay slang) word, was popularized by Hubert Selby, Jr in his book Last Exit to Brooklyn. He is also the author of Requiem for a Dream.
