Gastrointestinal stromal tumor
In medical oncology, gastrointestinal stromal cell tumors (GIST) are tumors arising from stromal cell tissue in the gastrointestinal tract. A GIST is a form of sarcoma.
Pathophysiology
The c-kit molecule (CD117) is a tyrosine kinase, which makes GIST tumors amenable to therapy with imatinib (see below).
Recent developments
The new drug imatinib (Glivec®, Gleevec®) specifically inhibits a number of tyrosine kinases, including c-kit. Its other therapeutic targets include chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).
