Gary Doer

Gary Doer (March 31, 1948) is the current NDP Premier of Manitoba. He was first elected to the Manitoba legislature in 1986 and became Minister of Urban Affairs under premier Howard Pawley. Pawley's minority government was defeated in a Motion of No Confidence and he decided not to run for re-election. Pawley remained Premier during the election campaign but Doer, as the new party leader, led the NDP campaign.

The NDP was not re-elected, and Progressive Conservative leader Gary Filmon became Premier. For the next eleven years Doer served as leader of the opposition, until the NDP won the 1999 election and he became premier. He and his party were re-elected in 2003 with the largest majority of seats for a Manitoba NDP government, and with slightly more than 50% of the popular vote.

Doer's government has been moderate and pragmatic in tone, and free of the more dramatic sort of reforms undertaken by previous NDP governments.
