Foreign Service

For people who check facts
The Foreign Service is an operating unit of the United States Department of State and has 20,588 employees.

Foreign Service officers represent America; analyze and report on political, economic, and social trends in the host country; and respond to the needs of American citizens abroad. They serve in Washington, D.C and at nearly 265 U.S. diplomatic posts around the world. They are part of the frontline personnel of all U.S. embassies, consulates and other diplomatic missions.

The Foreign Service is distinct from the Civil Service; the State Department employs members of both.
