The national flag of Benin was originally adopted in 1959 and replaced in 1975. On August 1, 1990, the current design was reintroduced, upon the removal of the Marxist regime. The colors are traditional Pan-African colors, specifically: green symbolizes hope, yellow symbolizes wealth and red symbolizes courage.
