Elitserien is a Swedish high-calibre ice hockey league.

The first season of Elitserien was played in 1975/1976. Färjestad BK and Djurgårdens IF hold the record of 6 wins (Svenska mästare) each in the league.

Organisation

The present Elitserien contains 12 teams, playing 50 rounds each.

The score system works as follows:

The winning team of Elitserien earns the advantage of playin on home-field in all decisive playoff games. As of 2002, the winning team also receives a 1 million
SEK as a bonus.

The playoffs

The playoffs begin when Elitserien has finished. The eight best teams compete to win the gold medal (SM-Guld). Team number 9 and 10 have finished their season, while number 11 and 12 play cualification rounds to stay in Elitserien. All games during the playoffs are played with the best of seven games.
