Dufferin Roblin
Dufferin Roblin (born 1917) is a Canadian businessman and politician. He served as premier of Manitoba from 1958 to 1967. He is the grandson of Sir Rodmond P. Roblin.First elected to the Manitoba legislature in 1949, he became leader of the provincial Progressive Conservative Party in 1954. His government upgraded highways, created parks, and built the floodway around Winnipeg. Roblin's government was more progressive than its Liberal predecessor. It reintroduced French language instruction in schools, modernized hospitals, expanded social spending and strengthened social welfare programs. Roblin's government also improved postsecondary education and promoted urban development by consolidating the municipalities in the Winnipeg area into a single metorpolitan entity. Roblin also brought Manitoba's system of one-room schoolhouses into the modern era by building consolidated schools.
After resigning in 1967 to run in that year's federal Progressive Conservative leadership convention but lost the race to become leader of the federal Progressive Conservatives to Robert Stanfield. Roblin was appointed to the Senate in 1978, and served as government house leader in the Senate from 1984 to 1986 which also gave him a seat at the Mulroney cabinet .
