Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) can trace its history to 1887, it was set up on an ad-hoc basis in 1978 and was fomally established under the Dublin Institute of Technology Act, 1992. The institution is separate to the other Institutes of Technology and emphasises its difference, though they share many characteristics, it is the largest higher education institution in the Republic of Ireland.

In 1996 the institution sought university status, it is a degree awarding institution, i.e. it has powers comparable to a university; the institution is subject to National Qualifications Authority of Ireland. The institution offers sub-degree awards, the DIT Certificate and the DIT Diploma, it also awards degrees at Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral level. The institution is currently planning a single campus, the Gormanstown Campus, thus moving from its many city centre locations.
