Doctor of Medicine

The Medicinæ Doctor or Doctor of Medicine (M.D. or D.M.) is a doctorate degree usually awarded to physicians.

In the United States the MD is a qualification held by all physicians. In the United Kingdom and in countries that follow its tradition, physicians graduate instead as Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery (variously abbreviated MB BS; BM BCh, etc.), and the degrees of Doctor of Medicine and Master of Surgery are higher doctorates reserved for those who have contributed significantly to the academic study of medicine and surgery respectively.
