Biography

She was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada on November 16, 1964. Her parents and grandmother had already been musical; surrounded by Classical and Jazz music she started practicing piano at the age of 4.

During her youth the family moved to Vancouver. In the local High School she took part in a small jazz group. At the age of 15 she regularly gave evening sessions in several Nanaimo restaurants.

Legendary bass player Ray Brown (†2002) became enthusiastic about a performance of hers; in the following years he made some connections with influential teachers and producers.

She was 17 when the Vancouver Jazz Festival sponsored her studies at the famous Berklee College of Music in Boston. After three terms she moved to L.A where Jimmy Rowels refined her piano playing and asked her to practice singing.

In 1990 she went to New York. Three years later her first record was released.

Breaking through with Stepping Out (1993) with John Clayton and Jeff Hamilton she caught the ear of Tommy LiPuma. He produced her second record Only Trust Your Heart (1995).

For You (1996) was nominated for the Grammy and continued for 70 weeks in the Billboard Traditional Jazz Charts. Love Scenes (1997) quickly became a hit record with the trio of herself, Russell Malone (guitar) and Christian McBride (bass).

New variation orchestral arrangements by Jonny Mandel filled the background on When I Look In Your Eyes (1999); more Grammy nominations came along, and she was rewarded as Best Jazz Musician of the Year. The band mix was kept, following arrangements on The Look Of Love (2001) created by Claus Ogerman; this record achieved platinum status.

Her first World Tour started in September 2001. The Paris concert at the "Olympia" was planned to become her first live record. Diana Krall - Live in Paris (2002) broke all the previous records and her 2nd Grammy was won (Best Vocal Jazz Record) followed by a Juno Award.

In December 2003 she married Elvis Costello. With his influence she started to write and compose on her own; together they are working on the new record The Girl In The Other Room which has been released in April 2004.
