Demonic hierarchy

For people who check facts
At various points in history, different groups of Christians have constructed various systems of classification, or hierarchies of demons.

Since demons were fallen angels, the classificationss proposed for the latter were sometimes though to apply to the former as well. An example is the system proposed by Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, in the 4th or 5th century, which recognizes three Spheres or Hierarchies of angels, each containing three Orders or Choirs. In the first (highest) Sphere were Seraphim, the Cherubim, and the Thrones; in the second Sphere were the Powers, the Dominions, and the Principalities; and in the third Sphere were the Virtues, the Archangels, and the Angels.

During the Middle Ages, many other schema were proposed, some drawing on and expanding on Pseudo-Dionysius, others suggesting completely different classifications. Many constructed demonic courts along the lines of then-current European royal courts, populated by princes, dukes, and counts. Sometimes military titles were used instead or as well as these aristocratic ones.
