David Baltimore (born 1938) is an American biologist and a winner of the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine.

He received the Nobel prize in 1975, at the age of 37. His Nobel prize work involved the discovery that RNA can be transcribed (by reverse transcriptase) into DNA, upsetting what was until the early 70's a widely held dogma: that DNA led to RNA, which in turn led solely to proteins.

For most people outside of science, Baltimore is most well known for his role in a science misconduct case. Baltimore was forced to retract a paper that he published with Thereza Imanishi-Kari in 1986.

Baltimore has profound influence on national policy in matters concerning recombinant DNA research and the AIDS epidemic. As of 2004, Baltimore is president of the California Institute of Technology (since 1997).
