Darling Harbour is a large pedestrian precinct situated just to the west of Sydney's central business district. Darling Harbour stretches from Sydney's China Town and the Sydney Entertainment Centre in the south, past Sydney's Chinese Gardens, to the exhibition and convention centers on the "harbourside", along with the Maritime Museum. On the opposite side of the harbour is Cockle Bay, where many pubs and nightclubs are found and the Aquarium. West of Darling Harbour is Pyrmont, a largely residential area (historically an industrial area) which is only 15 minutes walk from the city, and contains the Star City Casino.

History

Darling Harbour was originally part of the port of Sydney. In the mid-to-late 1980s it was renovated as a pedestrian and tourist precint.

Tourist attractions and amentities

It is a popular weekend visit for tourists and local families alike, with special events organised often (700 events per year). Weekends are popular, with locals and tourists alike. The shops largely target overseas tourists, but many people who visit Darling Harbour are Australians. There are laser light shows on spraying water, Latin music and dancing (Bacardi Festival), children's rides and street performances. Cockle Bay has a busy nightlife, on the weekends, largely targeting a young crowd.

Darling Harbour hosts several large hotels. Two Novotel hotels, at opposite ends of Darling Harbour, the Mercure Serviced Apartments, and Hotel Ibis. The largest hotel in Sydney is located at Darling Harbour, Four Points by Sheraton Sydney, having 649 rooms.
