Contemporary Dance is the name generally used to refer to the genre of dance and dance training that began as Modern Dance in the early twentieth century.

Sometimes called in Britain 'New Dance' also. Contemporary Dance usually includes those styles and choreographers that came during and after the post-modern era of dance in the 1960s and 70s. The major developments in dance technique since this era are Release Technique and Contact Improvisation.
