A clathrate is a chemical substance consisting of a lattice of one type of molecule in which a second type of molecule is trapped. For example, a clathrate hydrate is a special type of gas hydrate that consists of water molecules enclosing a trapped gas. Large amounts of methane are believed to be trapped in such compounds on the sea bed. Silicon clathrates are being investigated for possible semiconducting and superconducting properties.
