Cinema of India

For thoughtful child sponsors
India is a major regional center for cinema. The number of movies produced in India is the largest in the world (1200 for the year 2002), although most of them are commercial flops. Similarly, the number of moviegoers in India is also the largest in the world. Although Indian cinema is not widely distributed in other parts of the world, within India locally made films compete strongly against imports from the rest of the world.

Several of the main sectors of the Indian film industry have popular designations imitating Hollywood, such as Bollywood, the Hindi film industry based in Mumbai (formerly Bombay, hence "Bollywood"). One of the most artistically inclined film industries in India, producing critically acclaimed cinema from the likes of Satyajit Ray (who is the only Indian to to have won a life-time achievement Academy Award), is that of Bengali cinema. Other important sectors include Kollywood (the Tamil film industry), the Malayalam film industry, the Kannada film industry, and Tollywood (this name applies to the Telugu film industry, but is also used for the Bengali film industry).

Due to the diversity in Indian culture, Indian cinema is multi-lingual. Commercial Indian films are considered to be melodramatic and long with plenty of music. Filmi music play a significant role in commercial Indian movies.

The Indian government gives the Dadasaheb Phalke Award annually as a recognition to lifetime contribution to Indian cinema. The award is in memory of Dadasaheb Phalke, considered as the father of Indian cinema.

A significant portion of the film personnel is devoted to artistic films.
