Cheshire is an administrative county in North West England. Its county town is the city of Chester. It borders Flintshire, Wrexham, Merseyside, Greater Manchester, Derbyshire, Staffordshire, and Shropshire.
Cheshire's official title is the County of Chester. Cheshire is a contraction of "Chestershire".
Some northern parts of the county are effectively suburbs of Manchester or Liverpool, and many of those who work in these cities commute from other parts of the county. Additionally, some towns that are part of the traditional county of Cheshire also became part of the new metropolitan counties of Greater Manchester and Merseyside in 1974. In 1974, the administrative county was modified and lost its far north-eastern slice of land north of Glossop to Derbyshire, but gained Warrington from Lancashire. However Warrington became independent of Cheshire again in 1998 along with Halton when they were reconstituted as unitary authorities.
