Cathine
Cathine (β-hydroxy
amphetamine) is a
monoamine alkaloid found in the
shrub Catha edulis. Closely related to
ephedrine,
cathinone and other
phenethylamines, it may contribute to the
stimulant effect of
Catha edulis, although another constituent,
cathinone appears to show stronger activity. Cathine is one of the optical isomers of phenylpropanolamine that has been used in
OTC appetite suppressant and
nasal decongestant medications. A scientific study (Kernan
et al. 2000) found an increased risk of hemorrhagic
stroke in women who used phenylpropanolamine, although it is not clear which isomer is to blame. In November
2000, the
FDA issued a public health advisory against the use of the drug.
