Caroline Chisholm
Caroline Chisholm was born in 1808 and even when she was a young girl she was interested in helping people. When she was twenty-two she married Archibald Chisholm who was an officer in the British army.
Soon after they were married they decided to move to Australia.
When they arrived in Sydney they were appalled by the state of the town. For at that time Sydney was still a convict town and there were many people on the streets, especially women.
This shocked Caroline and inspired her to ask the Governor for a place to house women and find jobs for them.
After meeting the governor many times and pleading strongly, the governor granted her wish and gave her the immigration barracks.
Although the building was filthy and full of rats , she was pleased, and set to work to start helping the female immigrants.
The home soon became a huge success. It moved most of the women off Sydney's streets and found jobs for over a thousand women.
Caroline died in 1877, yet she is still remembered as one of Australia's greatest women and ÃÂÃÂthe Immigrants FriendÃÂÃÂ
