Canadian slang
Canadian slang is words or phrases of slang exclusive or from Canada.List of Canadian slang words or phrases:
- 2-4 -- a case of 24 beers
- 26er -- a 26oz bottle of alcohol ("a 26er of vodka")
- 40 -- a 40oz bottle of alcohol (see Forty pounder)
- Alcool -- grain alcohol; everclear (from French, but pronounced as in English)
- Canuck -- Canadian
- Chesterfield -- a couch or sofa
- Crappy Tire -- Canadian Tire
- Deke, deke out -- to feint, to trick or avoid someone ("to deke out of a meeting")
- Dick, dick all -- nothing
- Dogan -- a Catholic; abusive, and now dying out
- Double-double -- a coffee with double cream, double sugar (especially, but not exclusively, from Tim Horton's)
- Forty pounder, forty ouncer -- a 40oz bottle of alcohol (see 40)
- Gettone -- in Toronto and environs, foosball; pronounced roughly as in Italian
- Ghetto blaster -- A portable stereo system. The term was common throughout North America at one time, but is still common in Canada.
- Goof -- 1: cheap sherry or fortified wine; 2: a mild insult; 3: to make a mistake (a goof, to goof)
- Grit -- member of one of the federal or provincial Liberal parties (but not the Quebec Liberal Party)
- Habs -- the Montreal Canadiens hockey team (from a contraction of habitants, a term for residents of New France). The team that eventually became the Montreal Canadians was sponsored by Habitant (as in Habitant Soup).
- Hogtown -- The city of Toronto
- Hooch -- cheap booze, especially homebrewed
- Hoser -- a mild insult
- Homo -- homogenized (as in homo milk)
- K -- Kilometres or kilometres/hour
- Klicks -- Kilometres or kilometres/hour
- Loonie -- Canadian one dollar coin
- Lotus Land -- British Columbia, especially the Lower Mainland around Vancouver
- Mickey -- a 13oz bottle of alcohol ("a mickey of vodka")
- Mountie -- A member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police
- Newfie -- A person from Newfoundland
- The Peg -- Winnipeg, Manitoba
- Pogey -- unemployment benefits
- R.C. -- A member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police ("I was pulled over by the R.Cs")
- The Rock -- Newfoundland (Also used for Vancouver Island on the west coast)
- Screech -- a particularly potent brand of Newfoundland rum
- The Soo - Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario
- Toonie -- Canadian two dollar coin
- Tory -- member of the Conservative Party (or the old Progressive Conservative Party)
- Twofer, two-four -- A case of 24 beers (see 2-4)
- Tuque -- a woollen winter hat, which may or may not have a pompon on top; a watchcap
- Van -- Vancouver
- Vic -- Victoria
- Yankee -- Any American
