British sitcom
A British sitcom is a situation comedy (sitcom) produced in United Kingdom.The British sitcom is hard to classify as they cover a wide range of styles and situation. A common factor is that the most successful sitcoms tend to have a distinctive style of off-beat or quirky humour.
Many British situation comedies have gained a large following around the world. For example; Dad's Army, Fawlty Towers, Mr. Bean, Blackadder, Red Dwarf, Yes, Minister, Keeping Up Appearances, As Time Goes By, Father Ted, The Office, Coupling, and Absolutely Fabulous.
Since the 1970s, the Cambridge Footlights club, the London based The Comic Strip club and the Edinburgh Festival have been the breeding grounds for much new talent in British comedy.
A number of writers have made a significant contribution to this genre. They include David Croft, Richard Curtis, Ben Elton and John Lloyd.
