In U.S. presidential politics, a battleground state is a swing state with a large number of electoral votes. These are the states on which campaigns will focus the most energy, time and money. Swing states with small numbers of electoral votes are less likely to effect the outcome of the election, though they can still affect the election in close races, such as the 2000 presidential election. Modern examples of battleground states are Ohio and Florida.
