The Battle of Szigetvar was a monumental battle in the city of Szigetvar, Hungary in 1566 between Hungarian forces under the leadership of Miklos Zrinyi and Turkish forces under Suleiman the Great. The entrenched Hungarian forces held off the Turkish troops for weeks until Zrinyi decided to leave the fort with all his men to make one massive push against the Turks. He and his men killed the Sultan and thousands of Turkish troops until they were shot down by musketmen. The battle was immortalized in the epic poem Szigeti Veszedelem by Zrinyi's grandson in 1664.
