Basildon

For thoughtful child sponsors
Basildon is an industrial town in Essex England with a population of around 101,000 (1994 est). The town is located roughly 30 miles (50 km) east of London and 12 miles (19km) southwest of Chelmsford. It is the administrative centre of the Basildon district

Basildon was created as a new town in 1949 from the merger of several smaller towns, and expanded to accommodate overspill population from London. It is part of the London commuter belt.

Basildon's main industries include chemicals, clothing, printing, engineering, tobacco, and alcohol.

The pop/rock band Depeche Mode originated from Basildon, as did the singer Alison Moyet.
