With a population of around 200,000, it is the second largest city in Bosnia. The first mention of the town dates back to 1320. The city features the Banski Dvori (halls of the ban), a national library, theater and the Museum of the Republika Srpska.
It has one major football (soccer) stadium and two smaller indoor sports halls. The local basketball, handball and soccer teams all bear the traditional name Borac (fighter), though the basketball club was recently renamed to Banjalučka pivara, after the Banja Luka brewery.
