Austrian Airlines was founded on September 30, 1957. On March 18 1958, the airline made its maiden flight, with a Vickers Viscount 779 taking off at 8:30 am Vienna local time for London.

September 26 1960 became the only dark day in the airline's history to date, when a Vickers Viscount 837 attempting to land at Moscow crashed near the Russian city. Thirty-one of the thirty seven people on board perished.

Austrian Airlines is today the country's international airline, flying to destinations in Europe, North America, Asia major and the Middle East. The airline flies out of Vienna International Airport in Vienna, Austria. The airline is now partnered with Lauda Air and Tyrolean. The airline has the IATA designator OS.
