Anode

An anode is an electrode. The word is derived from Greek ανα (up) and 'οδος (road,path) and it means literally the path through which the electrons ascend out of the electrolyte solution.

The anode is where oxidation occurs and is also the negative discharge plate in an electrochemical cell. In charge mode this plate becomes the cathode. In electronic circuits such as a cathode ray tube, the anode is the positive plate.

The opposite of an anode is a cathode.
