Alternative technology

Alternative technology refers broadly to any technology presented as a more efficient and/or environmentally friendly alternative to more estabished technologies which are resource-intensive or wasteful. Alternative technologies aim to utilize resources sparingly, with minimum damage to the environment, at affordable cost, and with a possible degree of control over the processes. If an alternative technology proves to be more cost-efficient than an established technology, it may eventually supplant it as the primary technological solution to a given process.

The term also includes products or production processes that promote or enhance material recovery, recycling or marketing of secondary materials, or that reduce or eliminate waste or emissions at the source of generation.
