Air Force Air Commandos
Air Force Air Commandos are commando soldiers of the United States Air Force. They are considered to be members of the United States special forces. There are three types of Air Force Air Commandos: combat controllers, pararescue jumpers ("PJs") and ground operators.
The combat controllers are similar to the air traffic controllers that can be found at any major airport, but with a few added duties. They either take over an airstrip or construct a new one and then direct the airplanes and helicopters to a safe landing on the ground.
Pararescue jumpers have what some consider to be one of the most difficult jobs in all of the armed forces. Not only are they trained and able to fight with virtually any special forces group, but they can also act as paramedics on the battlefield.
Ground operators are similar to the members of the Marine Corps Force Recon. They set up initial terminal guidance (ITG) for planes. The planes then drop bombs and/or flares in the area or at the coordinates that the operators have communicated to them.
All three tasks require the same intense initial training, but after training the combat controllers and the pararescue jumpers go to separate schools.
